Name Origins
Gros
Ventre (pronounced
“grow vont”). Means big stomach in
French. Used by French trappers in
1800’s to describe Atsina Indians.
Snake River – Lewis and Clark named part of this river after the
Shoshoni, or Snake Indians.
Teewinot – Shoshone for “many pinnacles”, the
Shoshone name for the Teton range.
Tetons – French Canadian trappers called
the three peaks “les trois tetons”, meaning the three breasts.
Yellowstone – The Minnetaree Indians of eastern Montana called this river
Rock Yellow River, according to French-Canadian trappers.
